The sun was dazzling as ten of us started the trek on FS20 to Rabbit Ears on Mt. Ashland.  Yak Trax or just hiking boots worked well on the hard-packed snow.  We could see Mt. Shasta and waves of mountains all around.  We passed by the FS 20 turn to Grouse Gap that is also groomed this season.  At the top of the hill by the Rabbit Ears rocks, we had clear views of Mt. McLaughlin and the Crater Lake mountains. Lunch was on the big rocks around the small parking lot below Rabbit Ears.   These rocks are xenoliths as Nancy noted.  Xenoliths contain rock fragments embedded as the magma was cooling.  We quickly found big and minute rock fragments embedded in the basalt – just like a chocolate chip cookie.  It was a quick return down the hill past a few skiers and snowboarders that had climbed up the hillside.  Total miles: 4, Elevation gain:  600’.
