Ashland Hiking Home

On Wednesday we had 8 hikers come out to hike in Yreka at Greenhorn Park.  There was some very severe weather predicted along the I-5 corridor and just to be safe, I felt best to keep it to a short hike so we could all return home early in the day.

We started from a parking lot and connected to the Miner's Trail.  We could see an 18 hole disc golf course that was built in 2022.  We were pleased that this hike started on level terrain to get us warmed up.  From the Miner's Trail, we connected to the Flume Trail, then switchbacked onto the Humbug Trail.

As we hiked along, we could see Goosenest and then looked up another mountain covered in snow.  We guessed it was Ball Mountain or Willow Creek Mountain.  Barry identified another mountain with a sharp point called Craggy Peak. On doing some research, I found out there was a lookout on top that was once destroyed by lightning in 1989 and later replaced.  We eventually saw Whaleback and Mount Shasta was covered with clouds.

We went to the Big Ditch Trail and then the Oak Trail and the Goat Trail.  We then went to the Lower Greenhorn Picnic area and had our lunch at a large picnic table.  As we were there, a big gust of wind blew a bunch of dust across the area and the large trees were swaying back and forth. The wind calmed down and we packed up and walked along the Veteran's memorial Trail.

As we were going around Greenhorn Reservoir we saw a double crested cormorant and many geese.  We crossed a bridge at the spillway and continued to the mining equipment and buildings.  Then circled back to our cars.  We went 4.03 miles with 631 feet of gain.  We were back in Ashland by 1:20pm way before any storm conditions which never materialized in the southern part of the state.
